Volunteering among Older Adults and Health: A Longitudinal Study
Lee Hyun-Kee

Abstract
This study examines the effects of volunteerism among older persons on the health outcomes. The paper used 3 waves(2006, 2007, 2008) of Korean welfare panel study(N=5,768). The Generalized Estimating Equation analysis estimated regression models of physical and mental health outcomes which include volunteering status, volunteering frequencies, age, sex, and other context variables as independent variables. The results showed that volunteering increases the self-rated physical health, reduces depression, and improves the self-respects for older people and that the volunteering health effects have a threshold effect on mental healths. However the study found that there is not a moderating effect of age, sex, and marital status on the volunteerism health effects. The thesis interprets the volunteering health effects with construct concepts of social integration and social supports, based on the theory of social relationships and health. The results of this study indicate that volunteering has health effects, and developing and promoting volunteer programs for older adults is needed for Korean society.
